Abstract

Patient-doctor communication is an integral part of clinical practice. The purpose of this study is to examine the effective explanatory skills needed by doctors. Assessing the patient¡¯s knowledge and emotional condition and building the doctor¡¯s credibility (expertise, trustworthiness and dynamism) are presented as the fundamental principles of explanation. For successful explanation it is necessary to package facts and ideas in ways that patients can understand and remember. Doctors can do this by using familiar, simple and concrete words, by arranging ideas in an organizational pattern (ex. Chronological Patterns, Spatial Patterns), by placing the most important information first or last. These 3 skills aim for the maximum of explanation clarity.
